For assignment #6, I’d like for you to write a reflective essay (1-2 pages, double spaced, times new roman font) on your experience of mindfulness meditation. Herein, I’ll briefly describe the practice of mindfulness meditation. You should plan to spend at least 10 – 15 minutes (longer if you’re able to sustain it) engaged in meditation.
You needn’t adopt any particular posture for the meditation exercise. However, it’s preferable that you sit in a comfortable position, since repositioning your body once you’ve begun will only distract you. Also, the location for the exercise is also of your own choosing, but it’s preferable to select a quiet place where you won’t be readily disturbed.
Once you’ve adopted a comfortable sitting position in a tranquil location, you should simply focus on your experiences. Some people believe it’s easiest to begin by focusing on your breathing, but that’s not required. All you should do is observe your “perceptual inputs” as they arise and disappear. You shouldn’t think about those inputs – or anything else for that matter – but just observe them. (This can be a challenging, which is why many suggest focusing on your breathing to maintain your attention/focus.) Of course, you’ll get distracted and sometimes your mind will wander, but once you recognize this, rather than admonishing yourself, gently return to the task at hand: observing your perceptual experiences.
Some of you may have already practiced meditation, or perhaps you’re currently practicing it. In those cases, you should undertake the mediation exercise with which you’re most familiar or with which you feel most comfortable.
After you’ve tried for at least 10 – 15 minutes to engage in some form of mindfulness meditation (like the type I’ve described above or one type of your own choosing), think about your experience. How did it feel? Was this a new experience? Besides answering questions of this sort, your reflection paper should, in general, describe the experience of your meditation in as much detail as you can.
