Question Description
Twice during the semester, you will find a news story that ties in with the course material. I amencouraging you to connect current world and US events with our discussions and your readings. Byusing real-world examples to illustrate the abstract theories we are learning, you should be better ableto develop a well-rounded understanding of the material. For this assignment, I want you to pay attention to the news. I encourage you to both watch the newsand read the paper for ideas, but you will need to access a news article online so that you can sendme the link. Suggestions for trusted, relatively un-biased news websites (both US and internationally)include National Public Radio (NPR) – www.npr.org, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) -www.bbc.com, The New York Times – www.nytimes.com, and Reuters – www.reuters.com. I wantyou to use one of these sites or another news website to find your information – I do not wantcontent from Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post, Twitter, or other opinion-based sites. If you are notsure if your site is reliable, please ask me. In addition, I want current events, so restrict your search tothe last month.Once you have found a news article, be sure to provide me the link to the story in your paper.Summarize the article in two or three paragraphs. Remember the “who, what, when, where, andwhy” questions – tell me what happened, where it happened, etc. After you have summarized thearticle, take at least a page to connect the current event to our course material. Be sure to reference atleast two course readings in the second part of this assignment. For example, if you aresummarizing an article on criminal justice system reforms, you may want to connect it to Chapter 4,which looks at class privilege and Chapter 5, which examines racial and ethnic inequality. In all, yourpaper should be at least 2 pages, double-spaced.
